KHU Strengthens Ties with KEBS to Advance Quality Standards in Higher Education

We were privileged to receive Mr. Charles Maru, Head of the National Quality Institute (NQI) at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), for a courtesy visit to our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Kiplangat. Mr. Maru was accompanied by Ms. Alice Mithoma during this important engagement.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to explore shared interests in advancing a culture of quality within higher education and public institutions. Discussions focused on how Kenya Highlands University can align more closely with both national and international quality standards—especially through initiatives that promote excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Mr. Maru is a leading advocate for quality assurance in Kenya. As the head of NQI, he plays a pivotal role in promoting best practices in quality management systems across various sectors. He is also a key figure in the Kenya Quality Awards—an initiative that recognizes institutions and organizations that demonstrate exceptional performance in quality service delivery.

In addition to his advocacy work, Mr. Maru leads training and capacity-building programs geared toward ISO certification, particularly in the implementation and auditing of management systems. These efforts are central to KEBS’ mission of enhancing national competitiveness and promoting service excellence.

We were honored to engage with Mr. Maru and Ms. Mithoma and greatly value the insights they shared during the visit. The meeting underscored the importance of building strong partnerships between academia and national institutions to drive quality improvements that benefit both students and society at large.

Our Vice Chancellor affirmed that Kenya Highlands University remains firmly committed to continuous improvement and to adopting quality frameworks that enhance institutional performance and societal impact.
