Our History

Our Beginnings: A Legacy of Learning (1932-Present)

The ideological heritage of educational instruction at Kenya Highlands University (KHU) dates back to 1932, when missionaries from the World Gospel Mission recognized the need to train their converts in Christian education and leadership. This vision laid the foundation for an institution that would evolve into one of Kenya’s most respected centers for higher learning.

Early Years: A Mission-Driven Institution

Initially, the institution was established as a Bible training school, aiming to equip local church leaders with theological and pastoral education. Over the years, the school expanded its programs to include teacher training, business, health sciences, and information technology, reflecting a broader mission to serve both the spiritual and professional needs of the community.

Growth and Expansion

  • Mid-20th Century: The training school transitioned into a Bible College, offering diploma programs in theology and Christian ministry.
  • 1990s: With increasing demand for higher education in Kenya, the institution expanded its curriculum beyond theology to include courses in education, business, and social sciences.
  • 2002: The institution received official recognition as Kenya Highlands Evangelical University, strengthening its academic offerings and faculty capacity.
  • 2011: The university was granted a charter by the Kenyan government, officially becoming Kenya Highlands University (KHU), with the authority to confer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
