Welcome to the School of Education and Social Sciences of Kenya Highlands University. The School is entrusted to equip our students with knowledge, skills and attitude promotion in Christian values for professional service delivery amongst various communities in the Republic of Kenya and outside. The School of Education and Social Sciences offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs,for instance, Bachelor of Education (Arts), Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Arts in Counselling, Master of Arts in Religious Studies, Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies. We anticipate commencing Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Education in various professional fields

The graduates of the School of Education and Social Sciences do manifest high standards of capability for service delivery in the field of ministry to an extend that many doors are open for them due to testimony which is already planted in various organizations, multinational companies, schools and churches. They advance their careers as educators, counsellors, psychologists and good applicants of the of the holy scriptures in their various fields of specialization. We leverage friendly learning environment, modern science and technology to ensure attainment of high quality faith, life and learning experiences. These acquisition of knowledge and skills prepare them for broader job-market and absorption. The School intends to offer School-Based/Work-Based and flexible part-time programs for advancement and specialization in various fields. Kenya Highlands University has very committed, dedicated and fully empowered faculty who have demonstrated high levels of service delivery in their areas of expertise.

Brief Description of the School

The School of Education and Social Sciences currently houses three departments: Department of Education, Department of Theology and Department of Counseling Psychology. The School is continually developing new programmes based on the current need in the job market and the society. With this growth in programmes, the departments will also grow accordingly. Each of the departments is headed by a head of department.

The MA in Counseling Psychology is committed to: academic excellence, emotional maturity, spiritual vitality, and rigorous research by its students that will enable the students to go to the market place and be good at problem identification, management and solution finding. This programme provides a pathway for students who are passionate about helping others, driven to address mental health concerns, and eager to develop their professional skills in an evolving and impactful field. Whether the motivation is personal fulfillment, career growth, or a commitment to social change, the MAC at KHU will provide you with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed and make a lasting difference in the field of mental health.

This programme is applicable to any discipline and therefore applicants from all disciplines are admitted.

Employability:

Graduates will be employ as Counselors in all sectors/disciplines, researchers in Counseling related sectors/disciplines, pursue further studies in Counseling or related fields, become private practitioners as Counselors, or be employed in any other related field.

Expected learning outcomes of the Programme:

  • Acquisition of Knowledge – Students would have gained a Biblical understanding of the social/cultural, psychological, theological/spiritual, and political facets of human beings, particularly in a rapidly-changing society.
  • Transformation of Attitude – Students would have developed the ability to empathize with peoples across differences in tribe, religion, age, socio-economic status, especially in crisis situations, and demonstrate growth in their own personal emotional and spiritual development.
  • Application of Skills – Students would be expected to demonstrate the skills learned in assessment and management of counseling issues by adopting a solution focused approach.
  • Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking – Students will use scientific method to engage in innovative, integrative thinking and problem solving as well as interpret, design, and conduct basic

Admission Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree from a chartered university

Bachelor of Education (Arts) and Bachelor of Education (Science)

Bachelor of Education (Arts) and Bachelor of Education (Science) degrees programmes endeavor to go beyond the theory of education to its practical implementation in the educational sector and in the community. They prepare students with skills to teach, communicate and collaborate with all the stakeholders in their profession. The student will also be trained to be effective and efficient facilitator, mentor and an example to the learners in academic process to all ages and in every opportunity. Bachelor of Education programmes prepare students to be facilitators of learning, mentorship, role modeling and team leaders in primary school, junior school, secondary schools, institutions higher learning and be directors of the educational ministries for the church. They prepare and equip students with skills for curriculum planning, evaluation, design and development at the education institutions where they well be working and their professional careers. Our Education programmes are in compliance with the Competency Based Education (CBE).

Employability:

Graduates will be employed as teachers/facilitators in junior, senior schools and secondary schools, TVET institutions, Ministry of Education, Church, and any other education related institution. Graduates can also pursue further studies in Education or other related fields.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programmes:

  • Critique the fundamental basics of education as a professional practice
  • Demonstrate the acquired professional knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies such as critical thinking and problem solving in the execution of their professional practice
  • Plan and reconstruct the theory and practice of teacher professionalism within one’s subject concentration
  • Prescribe and transform teacher professionalism in the context of emerging pedagogical, curriculum and societal dynamics

Minimum Admission Requirements:

  • Be a holder of KCSE certificate (or equivalent examination) with an aggregate of C+ and a minimum of C+ in the teaching subjects.
  • Be a holder of KACE with minimum of two principal passes in the relevant teaching subjects.
  • Be a holder of a diploma validated by the Commission for University Education in Education (Arts or Science).
  • Bachelor of Arts is Counseling Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology is committed to: academic excellence, emotional maturity, spiritual vitality, and solution focus by its students that will enable the students to go to the market place and be good at problem identification, management and solution finding. The academic instruction and required practicum in this program will provide an in-depth grounding in the theoretical and technical skills while integrating a Christian world-view and theology with psychological principles and practice so that the graduates of the program may function as competent professional counselors.

Graduates will be employ as Counselors in all sectors/disciplines, researchers in Counseling related sectors/disciplines, pursue further studies in Counseling or related fields, become private practitioners as Counselors, or be employed in any other related field.
