Kenya Highlands University convened a three-day faculty and staff retreat at St. Mary’s Pastoral Centre in Nakuru, bringing together faculty staff for a transformative engagement focused on strengthening service delivery and enhancing the overall student experience. The retreat provided a shared space for reflection, learning, and strategic alignment, reaffirming the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.
The event brought together Deans, Heads of Department, lecturers, and a section of administrative staff, creating a collaborative platform for meaningful discussions on improving academic delivery and embracing forward-thinking approaches to higher education.
The retreat was officially opened on the first day by Dr. John Gathii,Chair of Academic Committee, representing the Chair of the University Council, Dr. Irene Asienga. In his remarks, he reinforced the institution’s strategic direction and governance priorities. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Kiplangat, welcomed members and encouraged a productive and engaging retreat.
A key highlight of the retreat was a presentation by Prof. Jane Sang from the Open University, who delivered an insightful session on the role of technology in remote learning. Her presentation emphasized the growing importance of digital platforms and adaptive teaching methodologies in delivering quality education in an increasingly dynamic academic environment so as to attract students.
The next session was facilitated by Engineer Dr. John Mosonik who led a compelling session on the strategic positioning of Kenya Highlands University in advancing academic excellence, research, and innovation. His insights challenged participants to align institutional strengths with emerging opportunities to enhance competitiveness and broaden impact.
Day two featured a defining keynote address by Prof. Richard Mibei on “Reimagining Academic Excellence: Advancing Teaching, Research, and Innovation.” His presentation encouraged faculty to rethink traditional pedagogical approaches and adopt innovative, practical strategies that enhance learning outcomes while supporting scholarly growth. The address sparked deep reflection on the role of faculty in shaping a responsive and impactful academic ecosystem.
The programme was further enriched by contributions from Dr. John Gathii, Mrs. Linet Kisaka, and our own distinguished speakers, who addressed critical themes such as quality assurance, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement. Their insights offered practical frameworks for strengthening academic processes and sustaining excellence across the university.
Day two culminated in a strategic address by the Chancellor, Rev. Dr. Robert Langat, who articulated a compelling vision for repositioning Kenya Highlands University as a premier Christian university. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning, integration of technology, and the cultivation of critical thinking, highlighting the alignment between faith-based values, academic excellence, and intentional institutional growth. He further underscored that for Kenya Highlands University to attain premier status, it must be grounded in the pillars of University Learning, Light of the World, University leadership, and Legacy.
As the university continues its journey, such engagements remain instrumental in shaping a transformative learning environment that nurtures both academic achievement and holistic student development.
