KENYA HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY HIRDI BOARD MEETING – 16TH APRIL 2026

A significant step toward strengthening research and innovation at Kenya Highlands University was marked by a strategic meeting between the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Kiplangat, and the Board of the Highlands Institute for Research, Development and Innovation (HIRDI).

The meeting brought together a distinguished board led by the Chairperson, Dr. Fredrick Sawe (Walter Reed Research Institute) alongside members: Dr. Richard Sang, Dr. Pius Bett, Dr. Daniel Ngeno, Mr. Francis Lipuku, Dr. Deborah Langat, Ms. Janet Nyigei, and Dr. Josphat Kosgei. Their shared mission was to define a clear and actionable roadmap for advancing research, development, and innovation within the University.

At the heart of the discussions was the immediate establishment of a structured operational framework that will guide HIRDI in delivering on its mandate effectively. As a newly formed institute, HIRDI represents a strategic partnership with the Henry Jackson Foundation Medical Research International (HJFMRI), aimed at strengthening research coordination, fostering innovation, and enhancing institutional research capacity.

HIRDI is envisioned as more than just an institutional unit; it is set to become a driving force behind a vibrant research culture at Kenya Highlands University. By promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and expanding access to research opportunities and grants, the Institute aims at unlocking new possibilities for both faculty and students.

Ultimately, HIRDI’s work will focus on translating knowledge into practical solutions that address real-world challenges, reinforcing the University’s role as a hub for research, innovation and societal impact.

Following the meeting, the Board and University leadership toured the newly renovated offices designated for HIRDI and checked the site earmarked for the construction of a dedicated Research Institute complex. This hands-on inspection provided valuable insight into the readiness of the facilities and underscored the University’s long-term commitment to investing in research infrastructure.

The Vice Chancellor expressed his appreciation to the Board for their dedication and reaffirmed the University’s full support in ensuring the successful establishment and growth of HIRDI.

HIRDI’s journey is just beginning, but the foundation has been firmly laid. The future of medical research and innovation at Kenya Highlands University looks both ambitious and inspiring.
