KHU Health Sciences Team Undertakes Benchmarking Visit to UEAB

The School of Health Sciences had the great honour of undertaking a benchmarking visit to the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, in a valuable effort to learn, share experiences, and explore best practices in health sciences education and training.

The delegation was led by the Dean, Dr. Richard Sang, together with the Head of Department, Ms. Veronica Manyenze, and members of staff from the department. The visit provided an important platform for professional engagement, knowledge exchange, and reflection on approaches that can contribute to the continuous improvement of academic and nursing training.

Upon arrival, the team received a warm welcome from the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Msafiri Mmamba Jackson, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Otieno Kenneth, and Dr. Sammy Lagat from the Faculty of Nursing.

The benchmarking exercise focused on several key areas that are central to the delivery of quality health sciences education. These included facilities, equipment and learning resources, with discussions focusing on how institutions can create effective environments that support teaching, learning, and practical training. The team also explored curriculum development and academic standards, examining approaches to ensuring that academic programmes remain relevant, responsive, and aligned with professional and industry expectations. Another important area of focus was clinical practice and simulation. The discussions highlighted the importance of providing students with opportunities to develop practical competencies in both simulated and real clinical environments, preparing them effectively for professional practice. The team further examined student support systems, recognising the important role that academic, professional, and welfare support plays in enhancing students’ learning experiences and overall success.Accreditation and internal quality assurance also formed a significant part of the benchmarking discussions. The engagement provided an opportunity to learn from institutional approaches to maintaining academic standards, monitoring quality, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The visit also placed emphasis on research and innovation, highlighting the importance of strengthening research capacity, encouraging innovation among staff and students, and translating research findings into meaningful solutions for communities and the health sector.

The benchmarking visit was more than an academic engagement; it was an opportunity to build professional relationships, exchange ideas, and identify areas where institutions can learn from one another. As Kenya Highlands University such engagements are essential in promoting continuous improvement and ensuring that health sciences education at KHU keeps pace with changing healthcare needs and professional standards.

We sincerely appreciates the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, for the warm welcome, generous hospitality, and willingness to share valuable experiences and insights. We look forward to building on the lessons learned and strengthening collaboration in the pursuit of excellence in health sciences education, clinical training, research, and innovation at Kenya Highlands University.
