Kenya Highlands University has taken another important step towards strengthening digital learning, innovation and community engagement following a successful Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) public participation forum held at the University grounds today, Wednesday, 23rd September 2026.
The forum brought together University Management Led by our Vice Chancellor Prof. Joseph Kiplangat, representatives of the local community, Alumni, Business and Corporate institutions, students and other stakeholders to engage on the proposed development of new educational facilities at Kenya Highlands University.
The proposed development is being supported through a partnership between the M-PESA Foundation and Kenya Highlands University and includes the construction of a Digital ICT Hub Learning Centre, together with associated electrical, mechanical and other supporting infrastructure.
The proposed centre is expected to enhance the University’s capacity to provide modern learning opportunities and prepare students for an increasingly digital world. It is envisioned as a modern facility equipped with state-of-the-art digital learning infrastructure, creating an enabling environment for teaching, research, innovation and skills development. It is expected to support emerging areas of technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and other digital disciplines.
The facility will benefit not only students and staff but also the wider community by creating opportunities for digital skills development, knowledge sharing, innovation and collaboration with businesses and corporate institutions.
The engagement at KHU provided a valuable platform for a one-on-one conversation between the University and its stakeholders, allowing participants to better understand the project and contribute their views and perspectives on the proposed development.
Addressing participants during the forum, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Joseph Kiplangat reaffirmed the University’s commitment to transformation and to ensuring that students have access to the facilities and infrastructure required to support their academic experience.
He noted that the University is undergoing a transformation process aimed at ensuring that key facilities needed by students are made available, while positioning the University to respond effectively to the changing demands of higher education and the digital space.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the proposed Digital ICT Hub Learning Centre will be an important addition to the University’s infrastructure and will strengthen opportunities for students and community to learn, innovate and develop skills in emerging technologies.
Prof. Kiplangat also expressed his appreciation to Prof. Eng. John Mosonik for his support and contribution towards ensuring that the Digital Learning Centre will be constructed at Kenya Highlands University.
He acknowledged the role played by Prof. Mosonik in supporting the realization of the project, describing the initiative as an important investment in the University’s future and in the development of digital learning opportunities for students and the surrounding community.
The public participation exercise forms part of the formal EIA process for the proposed development. Under the applicable environmental assessment framework, new projects falling under the relevant categories are required to undergo an environmental assessment process and obtain the necessary approvals.
