KHU Strengthens Research Through HIRDI Initiative

HIRDI board meeting at Kenya Highlands University

A significant step toward strengthening research and innovation at Kenya Highlands University was marked by a strategic meeting between the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Kiplangat, and the Board of the Highlands Institute for Research, Development and Innovation (HIRDI).

The meeting brought together a distinguished board led by the Chairperson, Dr. Fredrick Sawe( Walter Reed Research Institute) alongside members: Dr. Richard Sang, Dr. Pius Bett, Dr. Daniel Ngeno, Mr.Francis Lipuku, Dr. Deborah Langat, Ms.Janet Nyigei, and Dr. Josphat Kosgei. Their shared mission was to define a clear and actionable roadmap for advancing research, development, and innovation within the University.

At the heart of the discussions was the immediate establishment of a structured operational framework that will guide HIRDI in delivering on its mandate effectively. As a newly formed institute, HIRDI represents a strategic partnership with the Henry Jackson Foundation Medical Research International (HJFMRI), aimed at strengthening research coordination, fostering innovation, and enhancing institutional research capacity.

HIRDI is envisioned as more than just an institutional unit; it is set to become a driving force behind a vibrant research culture at Kenya Highlands University. By promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and expanding access to research opportunities and grants, the Institute aims at unlocking new possibilities for both faculty and students.

The Vice Chancellor expressed his appreciation to the Board for their dedication and reaffirmed the University’s full support in ensuring the successful establishment and growth of HIRDI. He emphasized that the University is committed to providing adequate resources, strengthening institutional policies, and fostering a supportive environment that will enable the Institute to thrive. He further noted that HIRDI will play a vital role in advancing research capacity, promoting innovation, and enhancing collaboration with both local and international partners. Additionally, he encouraged continuous engagement among stakeholders to ensure the Institute delivers impactful, sustainable, and high-quality research outcomes that address real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to societal development.

Following the meeting, the Board and University leadership toured the newly renovated offices designated for HIRDI and checked the site earmarked for the construction of a dedicated Research Institute complex. This hands-on inspection provided valuable insight into the readiness of the facilities and underscored the University’s long-term commitment to investing in research infrastructure.

The Vice Chancellor expressed his appreciation to the Board for their dedication and reaffirmed the University’s full support in ensuring the successful establishment and growth of HIRDI. He emphasized that the University remains fully committed to providing the necessary resources, policy support, and institutional leadership required to enable the Institute to thrive. He further noted that HIRDI will play a critical role in strengthening research capacity, fostering innovation, and enhancing collaboration both locally and internationally.

In addition, he highlighted the importance of building strong partnerships with research institutions, government agencies, and development organizations to expand opportunities for funding and knowledge exchange. He encouraged faculty members and students to actively engage with the Institute and take advantage of the research opportunities it will offer. The Vice Chancellor also underscored the need for a sustainable and results-driven approach that will ensure HIRDI delivers impactful outcomes and contributes meaningfully to national and global development agendas.

As HIRDI begins to take shape, it stands as a promising beacon for research excellence. The institute is expected to elevate the University’s academic standing while contributing meaningful solutions to societal needs.
